Whippet Mix?

Postby Kandpcon4 » Mon Mar 05, 2012 8:36 pm

Hi. I'm hoping you can help me. I adopted our dog, Jack, and they told us their guess was he was a Boston Terrier mix. He's now 11 months old and it's obvious he is not a Boston Terrier mix. I was walking him yesterday and a guy passing by said he was a whippet mix. I know when they are mixes they are hard to tell and the temperament can be all over the place but I'm trying to find out more about him as he's just a cool dog. Very very fast but also lazy and sleeps all day. He gets along with my 12 year old Boston Terrier but he's aloof with other dogs; he wants to chase smaller dogs. He's very sensitive to the way I speak to him. I thought maybe y'all could tell by looking at him if he is a whippet mix. If so, I want to do more research on the breed and maybe get a full bred Whippet. Thanks! Kerri

It's really hard to tell from pictures but my gut feeling would be probably not a whippet mix. He sure is cute though. You could always try one of those DNA tests that are supposed to tell you what breeds they are - although I think most of them are fairly inaccurate. May be fun just to see what it comes up with :)

No, I don't think he has any Whippet blood in him. But he is super-cute all the same!

I'm guessing Boston Terrier, Jack Russell, maybe some Beagle in there somewhere....
What I need right now is a strong drink and a peer group.

No idea whether he has whippet in his mix or not but he sounds as though he has a super personality and he's cute to boot!

Thanks for the responses. I might try the DNA test as I would love to know what he is ... even if it's just a guess. Ha. He's an awesome dog. Thanks again.

Don't know 'cause I have had no need to do the DNA tests, but from everything I've heard it would be easier to make up a certificate on your computer, a lot cheaper and every bit as accurate. Dog DNA is, from what I have been given to understand, all the same whether it is a dachsie or a Tibetian Mastiff. To get to where you actually see individual breed differences costs lots and lots of money and takes lots and lots of time to get results.

Awww ... thanks for the compliments on my Jack. We think he's pretty awesome too. I will nix the DNA test thought. Probably wouldn't matter anyway as his temperament could just be a combination from his "mutt" heritage. :D

He's a very nice looking dog, looks like he could be pretty athletic. Send more photos!
It looks like he's got rear dewclaws? Even if he doesn't have any whippet in him, if you feel he has some whippet traits, stick around here anyway and be part of the group. In truth, most problems or questions people have about their dogs aren't really breed specific, so most of it can apply to most dogs. We enjoy photos though.

Hard to tell from an upside down pic and a sideways one. His head looks quite domy, I dunno, I probably wouldn't be surprised if someone said he's a Boston/Whippet cross maybe with a bit of Staffy and or Boxer in there too. I wouldn't waste money on a DNA test though, I've heard some pretty surprising results from them.

I like the sideways pic, I can see he was wagging his tail. :romance-inlove:

I think with unknown mixes saying they are a mix of this or that breed of often useful more as a shorthand for personality or looks than an attempt to accurately describe the parentage. In that spirit, he sure fits the bill as a whippet mix as a descriptor, if not an accurate statement about his parents (because who knows?). :)

I bought some Whippet mix at Safeway yesterday.
Added 2 cups of water, stirred gently and 30 minutes later I had a litter of 5.

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. I will sit in the corner now.

However he is a cutie, give him bunches of hugs................ :romance-inlove:

I definitely see staffie/pittie in that mix.

A lot of people will label something as a whippet mix if it shows brindle and/or rose ears.
These are common traits of staffies and pitbulls, so when you search 'whippet' on say petfinder, something like 95%+ of the dogs listed are actually bully mixes.

Sounds like an awesome dog regardless of what his parents are. :) (adorabe too...)

Yes. He does have dewclaws. Should I have them removed? The vet said it wasn't necessary but he might get them caught on something and they might bleed a little. What are your suggestions? More pics attached. ;)
