Whippet won't settle in the evenings....any advice?

Postby nic_skev » Wed Jun 06, 2018 10:24 am

Hello, We have a 2½ year old whippet called Walter and just lately he will not settle in the evening after he's been out for his walk. We get back around 8.30 ish and have a cup of tea and try to sit down and relax for the evening but Walter just sits and barks at us. We play with him for a while but he just seems to constantly want our attention! We're not sure what to do and what he actually wants from us.

Any advice/help is welcomed

Thanks
Nic

Walter is very good at getting what he wants, so he keeps trying. If you sit down and then respond to his barks to play, he has trained you to do what he wishes. So why wouldn't he try again? Try organizing his playtime, perhaps with a special toy he only has for this event, either before his walk (preferable) or directly after. Then you decide when the playtime is finished, pick up the designated toy, put it out of sight and not where you want to relax, give him a small reward for being a good lad and have your tea. If he insists on barking, ignore at first (a week or so). If the behavior persists, then exclude him from the area where you are relaxing. Essentially you are substituting one behavior for another and hoping to eradicate the annoyance. Good luck and let us know how it goes

Thank you for your help on this and we will give this a try! We put him out the room when he's been barking at us for 30 minutes as we can't take it any more but then he just sulks when we let him back in the room. We've discovered that Whippets are very sensitive souls :D

Something else you can also try is to add a little 5 minute training session in. Just work on tricks or things you'd like him to learn. Thinking helps tire a dog out.

Poppy has just turned two and has also started this behaviour. She's so well behaved when we are out for her walks it's as if she needs to let off some steam when we get home. The tip that GrandmaB suggested worked for us, I just ignore the silliness and she stops pretty quickly, generally some poor toy will get killed and then thankfully she'll go to sleep.

Yes thankfully a combination of organised play time, playing with him with his puzzle toys, trying to take him new places for works a few times a week and then just ignoring his behavior seems to be doing the trick for us now! God whippets are very complex aren't they

Thanks for all your help
