torn acl

Postby mfulc » Tue Jan 29, 2019 2:55 am

Hello I've been reading up on some posts with those that have experienced a torn acl - wondering how the surgeries went and how your whippet is doing now - any advice is appreciated. My whippet 'Ryder' is 5 and we have a specialist appt next week - only want the best as you all do for my baby boy.
thank you kindly

Our whippet, Shane had TPLO surgery in 2011. He was 10 years old at the time. He had a complete rupture of the ACL. The surgery went very well. The 8 weeks of therapy afterwards was LONG. He was a good patient overall but had some early complications due to stitches coming out and incision becoming partially infected. He did eventually heal up just fine. He would walk and trot great with no pain and occasionally do a quick zoomie or two when frisky but, in his case, he could never run as hard and as fast, spinning and gripping, like he used to after his beloved tennis ball. That was to be expected. He lived another 3 years enjoying long walks and adventures before eventually succumbing to complications of CHF.

There are many surgeries and treatments for ACL injuries in dogs depending on the severity of the injury. Hopefully your pup, Ryder is doing better with whatever you and your vet chose to do to help with his ACL injury.
