It is with a heavy heart that I let you know that Dr. Tom Sooy, a friend to Whippets in Maryland and beyond, passed away yesterday. Dr. Sooy was a longtime Whippet owner and dear friend of Dr. Barbara Henderson's. He had an autoimmune problem for many years. Over the summer, he sold his practice up at the emergency clinic in Catonsville and bought a beautiful second home in Montana to enjoy fishing and such. The smile on his face when he talked about the place was priceless. I'm only sorry that he didn't have more time to enjoy it.
The last time I saw him was about a month ago at Barbara's. He was pale. He told me that he was headed out West for a bone marrow transplant, so I knew he was not well. But he was very optimistic at his chances. He had a good match for his marrow and a lot of confidence in his doctors. Unfortunately, his heart gave out on Saturday morning. He is survived by his wife, a son and his Whippets.
He was a tremendous friend to Whippet Rescue and over the years performed countless spays, neuters, tumor removals and a variety of other surgeries on WRAP Whippets. He charged us NOTHING. I can't even fathom how many Rescue Whippets he performed surgery on and how much of his time he put in, simply because he loved the breed. There are many Whippets who owe their lives to Tom or had more time with their people because of him.
I'll let everyone know about a memorial service when I have more information. He was a great man, and I doubt we'll ever see his likes again. So if you have a moment, please say a prayer or light a candle for Dr. Tom Sooy. I know he's got a great big passel of Whippets with him right now over that Rainbow Bridge.
