Dylan

Postby Greybeard » Fri Jun 14, 2019 8:12 am

Meet Dylan, who joined our household on Sunday.

He's 8½ weeks old and seems to be settling in nicely. An intelligent little chap, who seemed to 'get' toilet training immediately. We've had a couple of minor accidents, but both were because we weren't paying attention when he went to the door. This is in marked contrast to our existing Whippet, Sadie, who was a bit of a problem in this area.

Loads of energy though. I'm exhaused :confusion-shrug:

Oh what a sweetie! I have a 14 week old that I got when she was 8 weeks and although it is taxing at times, she is a joy.

And here he is making himself comfortable on Sadie.

Dylan_Sadie.jpg

He's an awful lot bigger than Sadie was at 9 weeks. He's also got brown eyes, Sadie's were blue until around 12 weeks, and he's clearly showing the Whippet deep chest, whereas Sadie had a figure resembling a short sausage at that age.

Sadie was the Puppy from Hell, so far Dylan doesn't seem as bad. I guess there's still time though...

I hope nobody objects to another picture of young Dylan?

He's 17 weeks old and now tips the scales at 9.3 Kg. I'm still very pleased with him, he seems eager to please and quite enjoys our little training sessions. He's learned the basics, and has very good recall (though no doubt once he realises there are more interesting things than me around he'll start considering recall optional). If he continues like this I may take him to agility training.

This was taken about a 3 weeks ago, it's a very short clip of Dylan and Sadie at the beach: https://youtu.be/HGtOZujBeOs

Oh, he's so handsome, he's looking very relaxed and regal!
Dylan is very similar in markings to our Whippet with almost exactly the same split along the face between the brindle and white. Just gorgeous!

Beautiful! Looks like such a calm dog.

I'm curious - what are your tips for training recall? We are trying with our little 10 week old but not much success yet....... Any ideas welcome. She does seem fairly treat motivated.

Oh, no. That picture was just in the eye of the hurricane...

I don't think I did anything different to anyone else, it's just that Dylan got the idea almost immediately. He was 14 weeks before we tried though, a little bit older than yours.

We went into an enclose area with a 10 metre lead (leash) and a few pieces of chopped salami sausage. I called "Dylan, c'mon!" and pulled gently on the lead, walking backwards as he came towards me and calling encouragement, giving him a treat & praise when he reached me. I did that no more than four times before trying it without the leash - he got it right every time. At the moment his recall is 100%.

It won't last though, he's a Whippet.
