The Young Explorer

He is small, blind, alone, hungry,
Feeling a chill; he cries out.
Waking, she responds immediately,
All caring, guiding, loving.
She is made of warmth and sustenance.
Softly murmuring, she nudges him
Into the comfort of her bosom
Where his brothers and sisters sleep.
Ah, yes! Why did I stray so far?
This is the life! He drinks. He sleeps.
All is well for now, but she knows
He is too curious, too fearless.
When he has rested, he will again roam
To the far side of the whelping box.
